Mapping Inherent Vice

Possible Adaptation

Acclaimed filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson (pictured above left) — director of such films as There Will Be Blood and Boogie Nights — has toyed with the idea of adapting Inherent Vice for the screen. Anderson has reportedly received Pynchon’s blessing to go forward with the movie, and actor Robert Downey Jr. is interested in the lead role of Doc Sportello. According to film-news blog The Playlist (from where the above image was taken), the movie could begin shooting this fall, although there seem to be no reports that shooting has begun yet. If the movie does get made, it will be the first-ever attempt to bring Pynchon’s work to the screen. Anderson’s track record and proven talent should assure that this will be an excellent adaptation.
